Description

This presentation will showcase the state of Latine Mental Health in North Carolina and how mental health providers can serve this community. Attendees will be equipped with an understanding of cultural considerations when working with this population. Additionally, this presentation will provide an overview of the current resources and support for bilingual therapy services in North Carolina.

Presenters

Camila A. Pulgar Guzman, Ph.D, NCC, LCMHC
Dr. Camila A. Pulgar Guzman was born in Santiago, Chile. She is a bilingual therapist and an Assistant Professor at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Since receiving her master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and after obtaining her Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate (LCMHCA) in 2016, Dr. Pulgar has worked tirelessly to fill the gap between the needs of bilingual therapists and the Latinx community’s mental health needs in Forsyth County, North Carolina. Dr. Pulgar is a graduate of the PhD program in Counseling Education and Supervision at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Her research focuses on acculturative stress and suicidal ideation in Latinx emerging adults, spirituality in counseling, bilingual supervision, and suicide prevention. Her research experience highlights the need for culturally responsive interventions and evaluations. She also started Salud Mental Health, PLLC, an organization that aims to fill the gap in accessible mental health services for the Latinx community in Forsyth County by providing bilingual counseling and resources. Dr. Pulgar is also a past board member for the National Latino Behavioral Health Association (NLBHA) and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), North Carolina Chapter. She received the Beginning Counselor Award from both the North Carolina Counseling Association (NCCA) and the Association for Child and Adolescent Counseling of North Carolina (ACAC-NC). She is also a recipient of the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) Minority Fellowship Award, Doctoral 2019–2020; the 2021 American Psychological Association (APA) Interdisciplinary Minority Fellowship; the Outstanding Advocacy Award from the Licensed Professional Counselors Association of North Carolina (LPCANC) in 2022; and most recently, the NBCC Servant Leadership Award (2025). Her continued work and engagement with the Latinx community is key to her passion for increasing access to mental health resources for underserved communities in both the clinical and research fields.
