Description
Ketogenic metabolic therapy is gaining attention in mental health care, yet its use is often limited by persistent myths and misinformation. This session will examine common concerns related to sustainability, dietary fat intake, safety, and early side effects, and contrast them with evidence-informed clinical realities. Drawing from current research and real-world clinical experience, the presentation will clarify how ketogenic therapy differs from popular weight-loss diets and how it can be thoughtfully implemented under appropriate clinical supervision. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of when ketogenic metabolic therapy may be considered, what safeguards are necessary, and how to engage in informed, grounded conversations with patients and interdisciplinary teams.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
-
Critically evaluate common myths surrounding ketogenic metabolic therapy in mental health care including concerns about sustainability, dietary fat intake, and safety and contrast them with current evidence and clinical observations.
-
Differentiate therapeutic ketogenic metabolic therapy from weight-loss–focused ketogenic diets, including differences in clinical goals, patient monitoring, and outcome measures.
-
Identify preventable contributors to early initiation symptoms and outline evidence-based strategies to minimize risk through education, electrolyte management, hydration, and gradual dietary transitions.
Educational Goal
This presentation aims to strengthen clinicians’ understanding of ketogenic metabolic therapy by examining common myths, safety considerations, and practical applications in mental health care. Participants will be better prepared to evaluate appropriateness and discuss this intervention with patients and interdisciplinary teams.
