Educational Goal
This session will deepen participants’ professional skill set by introducing the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model as an integrative, evidence-based approach for working with trauma, addictions, and complex emotional patterns. Attendees will gain a more sophisticated understanding of how to engage clients’ protective and vulnerable parts and cultivate Self-leadership, enhancing their capacity to promote lasting healing and resilience in future clinical practice.
Description
Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy is an evidence-based, non-pathologizing model of psychotherapy that views the mind as naturally multiple, with each person made up of discrete “parts” that carry roles, burdens, and gifts. This session introduces participants to the foundational principles of IFS through a blend of didactic presentation and experiential exercise. Core concepts explored include the nature of multiplicity and the three broad types of parts, Managers, Firefighters, and Exiles, along with techniques for parts identification and mapping. Attendees will examine the IFS understanding of the Self as the innate agent of healing and explore the qualities of Self-Energy and Self-Leadership that allow internal systems to unburden and integrate.
Participants will be guided through the “6 F’s” process of going inward and will practice unblending skills to differentiate Self from activated parts. The presentation highlights how protective parts develop to manage pain, how vulnerable exiled parts carry early burdens of shame or fear, and how compassionate witnessing facilitates transformation. Conditions shown to benefit from IFS, including anxiety, trauma, addictions, and relational difficulties, will be briefly reviewed to illustrate clinical applications.
By integrating lecture and direct experience, this workshop offers both conceptual understanding and practical skills. Clinicians will leave with a clearer grasp of IFS as a collaborative, empowering approach that promotes lasting change, greater resilience, and enhanced therapeutic presence.
