Description
Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) experience trauma and co-occurring behavioral health conditions at higher rates than those without IDD. Research demonstrates that effective behavioral health treatment is achievable when appropriate modifications and trauma-informed considerations are incorporated.
This four-part training series equips clinicians with a practical, integrated framework for supporting individuals with IDD across the continuum of care: from wellness promotion and trauma-informed nervous system regulation strategies to assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. Participants will review prevalence data, variations in symptom presentation, and necessary adaptations in therapeutic approach, communication, and session structure to improve outcomes.
The series will cover diagnostic considerations aligned with the Diagnostic Manual–Intellectual Disability II, modified case conceptualization strategies, and application of evidence-based practices such as trauma-focused CBT, DBT, EMDR, multisystemic therapy, Assertive Community Treatment, and Triple P Parenting. Additionally, participants will explore ethical and appropriate use of psychotropic medications as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
By the end of the series, clinicians will have practical tools to enhance wellness, improve diagnostic accuracy, and implement effective, trauma-informed behavioral health interventions for individuals with IDD.
