Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify five common and often-overlooked warning signs that may indicate problematic substance use or a substance use disorder in clients presenting for mental health services.

  • Utilize effective screening questions and evidence-based screening tools to better assess alcohol and drug use, including frequency, patterns, consequences, and impact on daily functioning

  • Recognize when additional assessment or a higher level of care is warranted and identify appropriate resources for connecting clients and families to support.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to teach participants effective client-centered clinical strategies to recognize and address substance use in a therapeutic setting.

Description

This presentation helps therapists, social workers, and other behavioral health professionals recognize when substance use may be contributing to a client’s presenting concerns, even when it is not immediately apparent. Participants will explore common warning signs, effective screening strategies, overlapping mental health and substance use symptoms, and practical approaches for discussing alcohol and drug use without creating shame or damaging the therapeutic relationship. Through clinical insight and real-world examples, participants will learn to ask more effective questions, identify when additional assessment or a higher level of care may be needed, and connect clients and families with appropriate resources.
