Description

We all carry a deep, often unacknowledged wound or unspoken longing: to be seen, to be heard, to belong. In a world that often values performance over presence, many of us learn to disconnect—not because we want to, but because, through pain, judgment, or survival, we learned to hide.

This session invites participants into a space of reconnection, rooted in the understanding that healing happens in community—not through perfection or pretending, but through presence and authenticity in safe spaces.

We will begin by exploring attachment as a basic human need, examining how it shapes our nervous system from infancy through adulthood. When that need is unmet or ruptured, the effects can be profound. Pain and trauma often give rise to judgment—both internal and external—that isolates us and reinforces shame.

In contrast, curiosity is introduced as a bridge-builder, a way to approach others with openness rather than fear. By embracing a trauma-informed perspective, we shift from “what’s wrong with you?” to “what happened to you?”, fostering empathy and connection.

At the core is compassion—not just as a feeling, but as a sustained practice of witnessing and caring, even when it’s uncomfortable. This practice creates the emotional safety necessary for healing and belonging.

Drawing on examples from Latin America, we will explore how compassion is embedded in community life, from shared celebrations to mutual support in times of hardship. Participants will leave with both insight and practical approaches to cultivating compassion, strengthening connection, and fostering community in their own contexts.

Educational Goal

This presentation will enhance participants’ ability to integrate trauma-informed and compassion-based practices into their professional work, fostering deeper connections and stronger therapeutic alliances. By cultivating curiosity, empathy, and cultural awareness, clinicians will strengthen their capacity to reduce isolation, promote belonging, and support healing in both individual and community settings.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Explain the role of attachment as a basic human need and its impact on emotional well-being.

  • Identify how judgment can contribute to shame, pain and isolation.

  • Apply curiosity-driven approaches that open space for connection and foster interpersonal interactions that nurture personal healing.

  • Integrate trauma-informed principles and compassion-based practices to foster healthy relationships and strengthen community bonds in the healing process.

Presenters

For over 20 years, María Paula has led social and economic inclusion projects with multilateral organizations, governments, and NGOs, working alongside vulnerable children, youth, women, and victims of armed conflict in Colombia, Spain, and other Latin American countries. Her deep commitment to personal growth led her to the field of trauma, bringing clarity to her purpose of freeing minds and hearts from suppressed pain. As a trauma-informed facilitator, she has worked in prisons with both men and women, witnessing how unhealed pain can lead to isolation and judgment. Yet, her personal and professional experiences have shown her the transformative power of cultivating community. She believes that sharing our stories and feeling heard and seen fosters courage, softens shame, and encourages compassion. Through this connection, our ability to form authentic relationships deepens, helping to restore the social fabric that unites us all.
