Description

The landscape of substance use is rapidly evolving as legally available psychoactive substances proliferate through gas stations, convenience stores, and online retailers. Join Dr. Aaron Weiner for an exploration of emerging "gas station drugs" that exploit regulatory loopholes, including semi-synthetic cannabinoids (Delta-8, THC-O), kratom, tianeptine, nitrous oxide, and others. This presentation examines the pharmacology, health risks, and regulatory challenges surrounding these readily accessible substances that are increasingly appealing to both recreational users and individuals seeking alternatives to scheduled drugs. Attendees will gain knowledge about these unregulated or poorly regulated compounds, their mechanisms of action, adverse effects, and how clinicians can understand and address their use in session.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify at least 3 categories of psychoactive substances currently sold through gas stations and convenience stores, including their primary active compounds and health risks

  • Explain the regulatory loopholes that allow these products to remain legal despite psychoactive effects comparable to illegal or regulated drugs

  • Define strategies to help individuals navigate the current landscape of legally obtainable intoxicants to make informed choices about their physical and mental health

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is for participants to understand the range of psychoactive substances easily available for purchase at gas stations and online, why they are available, and how they can address the use of these substances with clients.
