Participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of trauma-informed therapy interventions to support persons with SUDs while engaged in treatment.

  • Differentiate between pathology-focused and strengths-based approaches to behavioral healthcare and describe the benefits of integrating both models.

  • Identify at least three clinical strategies that foster connection, presence, and client empowerment within the therapeutic relationship.

  • Apply trauma-informed and recovery-oriented principles to promote greater client engagement, reduce treatment resistance, and support long-term recovery outcomes.

  • Evaluate opportunities within their own clinical practice to shift interventions from symptom management alone toward approaches that cultivate resilience, hope, and sustainable healing.

  • Identify six dimensions of a “whole person” care model and identify their overlap and differences in alignment with the ASAM 6 dimensions.

  • Identify and incorporate patient strengths and spirituality considerations into treatment plans and case conceptualizations to ensure Whole Person Health standards are delivered in their treatment.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this webinar is to increase clinicians' knowledge of evidence-informed, strengths-based approaches that complement traditional pathology-focused models and improve engagement, therapeutic alliance, and recovery outcomes.

Description

Behavioral healthcare has traditionally focused on pathology, diagnosis, symptom reduction, and risk management. While these approaches remain essential, emerging evidence demonstrates that recovery outcomes improve when clinicians also cultivate strengths-based, trauma-informed, and connection-centered approaches. In this presentation, TJ Woodward and Dr. Patrick Lockwood explore how shifting from a deficit-based model to one rooted in possibility, resilience, and human connection can improve client engagement, reduce treatment resistance, and foster sustainable recovery. Participants will leave with practical, evidence-informed strategies they can immediately integrate into clinical practice.

  • Addiction Professional
