Description
Athletes face special pressures and circumstances in the sport world that impact relationship with food and body. Clinicians working with the athlete population need to have a working understanding of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S), the impact of low energy availability on health and performance, and ways to support athletes in meeting their nutritional needs in their sport environment. This presentation provides an overview of the prevalence of eating disorders among athletes, conceptualization of RED-S as a critical lens for treating athletes with eating disorders, and practical ways dietitians and clinicians can support athletes in whole-person nourishment.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:

Identify at least 3 factors that contribute to development of eating disorders among athletes.

Explain Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport and roughly estimate an athlete’s energy availability.

Recognize at least 5 possible clinical indicators of under-fueling.

Educational Goal
The goal of this presentation is to educate eating disorder providers, particularly dietitians, on the effects of eating disorders and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport on health and performance.

Presenters
Taylor Larson, RD, CSSD, LD, CEDS is a St. Louis, MO-based nutrition counselor specializing in sports nutrition, eating disorders, and intuitive eating. She works both in her private practice, Strong Roots Nutrition, and as the Sports Dietitian for the Victory Program at McCallum Place Eating Disorder Centers. With over a decade of experience working with athletes and individuals with eating disorders, Taylor is passionate about helping people understand the wisdom and complexities of the human body to cultivate self-care and better align their relationships with food, body, and movement with their values and long-term goals for wellbeing.
