Description

Joseph Green and Brendan Berry present: “For Our Fathers,” an innovative experiential learning program. As individuals navigating long-term recovery, they use the creative arts to enhance their journey, along with those they serve in their respective practices. Brendan, a Grammy Winning, board-certified, and licensed music therapist, focuses his practice on mental health, addiction, and recovery. Through storytelling and spoken word poetry, Joseph disrupts harmful narratives to foster greater connection in all the places we occupy. Participants can expect to receive a deeper understanding of the value that the creative arts can bring into all of our collective spaces of wellness. Joseph and Brendan have combined their passions for educating, inspiring, and healing through their musical and spoken word collaboration, “For Our Fathers.” There will be performances, stories, and a few insights that you can bring directly to your practices.

Presenters

Brendan Berry

Brendan Berry is a GRAMMY Winner, accomplished composer and producer born and raised in Washington, DC. He currently is based out of Los Angeles, California, after residing in Brooklyn, NY for over a decade.

His professional career in music began as a performer, playing Bass at a young age, with the distinguished District of Columbia, Blue’s Alley Youth Jazz Orchestra and a basement dwelling punk rock band. Brendan went on to receive his Bachelor of Music from the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music in Studio Composition.

Early in his collegiate career he began writing film scores for documentary short films. Since then, he has written scores for two theatrically released feature films, the award-winning The Anonymous People and Generation Found. Brendan has also written for commercials, dance companies, documentaries, web series’, and TV shows including HBO’s Vice and American Pickers on the History Channel. As he has refined his craft and evolved, Brendan has taken inspiration from many composers and artists, including Explosions in the Sky, Max Richter, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Yann Tiersen, Goldmund, Illuha, and Sufjan Stevens, and many more.

Brendan has always been passionate about music, sound and helping people. He began his own journey of recovery from addiction in 2006, and has since used his personal experience to support countless others around the world to find their own path in recovery. Because of his fervor for music and service, Brendan pursued and received his Master’s degree from New York University in Music Therapy in 2014. While continuing to compose and produce music and sound work, he began working as a full-time music therapist in the mental health field, utilizing all aspects of his background in music to support growth and healing in his community.

With every project Brendan undertakes, he dedicates this same level of devotion and service in hopes of using his love of music and therapy to guide his listeners emotional journey.

Joseph Green

Joseph Green is a motivational speaker, educator, trainer, professional storyteller, award-winning spoken word poet, and a person in long-term recovery.

Joseph’s life story and work are featured in media outlets such as Youth Today, UpWorthy, PBS NewsHour, NPR, and many more.  He has recently keynoted or presented at the 2017 American Society of Addiction Medicine, Talks @ Google, the University of Baltimore, 2016/18 California Statewide Conference on Substance Use Disorder, 2017 Utah Fall Substance Abuse Conference, and Wisconsin Voices for Recovery Rally for Recovery.

Joseph’s presentations and workshops are for anybody seeking a reconnection to purpose, motivation, or community. His work reminds us that more important than knowing what we are fighting against is knowing and never forgetting what we are fighting for.

With a background in theatre and performance poetry, Joseph intertwines storytelling and spoken word poetry to inspire his audience to join him on a journey  of self-care, self-awareness, self- forgiveness, and paying your blessings forward to make a world a better place for everyone. He believes strongly in stories’ innate ability to connect people to their higher purpose and one another.

Joseph Green’s workshops cover youth development, Creative Mindfulness as burnout prevention, inclusion and diversity strategies, youth prevention and recovery programming, and artistic activism. In his role as Program Manager at the Mentor Foundation USA, Joseph led the effort to revamp the interactive drug prevention youth rally known as “Shattering the Myths.” Joseph has partnered with many programs making a positive change in schools and communities nationwide. He has designed youth empowerment programs and a comprehensive training for adults working in youth development. In Washington DC, he created “The Healing Root DC” – a mental health literacy program for youth leaders. In Maryland, Joseph works with incarcerated youth to highlight their stories and help end mass incarceration.
