Spiritual competencies are often overlooked in supervision, leaving counselors in training unprepared to address clients’ spiritual concerns. This presentation explores the ethical responsibilities of supervisors when spiritual differences arise and offers strategies for navigating them. Drawing from scholarly literature, it highlights the challenges and benefits of spiritual dichotomy in supervision. The ASERVIC standards and ACA Code of Ethics will guide counselor educators in ethically integrating spirituality into supervision to foster multicultural competence.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to increase understanding of spirituality as a helpful tool for supervisions that can be ethically integrated into supervision.

Presenters

Dr. Washington is an Assistant Professor of Counseling at Belhaven University. He holds advanced degrees in counseling from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and has clinical experience in private practice and addiction treatment. His expertise includes marriage and family counseling, multicultural counseling, and the integration of psychology and theology.
