Educational Goal
Description
This transformative workshop addresses the critical, yet often overlooked, relationship between caregiver wellbeing and mental health outcomes in older adults. Dr. LaShanda Brown combines her expertise as both a nurse practitioner and mindfulness educator to provide mental health providers with practical, evidence-based tools for supporting this vulnerable ecosystem of care. Participants will gain clear frameworks for distinguishing between normal aging and concerning mental health symptoms in older adults, while simultaneously learning to identify early signs of caregiver stress and burnout. The workshop offers a unique dual perspective, demonstrating how supporting caregiver resilience directly improves mental health outcomes for older adults in their care. Through case studies, assessment demonstrations, and experiential learning, mental health providers will expand their toolkit for addressing the complex challenges that arise when supporting aging clients and their support networks. Dr. Brown's innovative approach integrates traditional clinical knowledge with accessible mindfulness practices specifically adapted for high-stress caregiving contexts. This session provides immediately applicable strategies for creating care structures that promote mental wellness across generations, identifying and leveraging community resources, and facilitating crucial conversations about mental health in later life. Participants will leave equipped with both assessment tools and intervention techniques that honor the dignity of older adults while sustainably supporting those who provide their care.
