Description
This educational presentation and panel discussion seeks to provide an annual review of the highest impact peer-reviewed publications and newsmaker events across the field of Addictions Treatment in 2024. Concise, critical summaries of some of the most important peer-reviewed publications and newsmaker events of the past year will be provided on key topic areas such as: addiction neurobiology, epidemiology, pharmacology, intoxication and withdrawal syndromes, screening and diagnosis, mutual help, harm reduction, dual diagnoses, and pharmacologic and behavioral interventions. The presenters will provide a more in-depth focus on a small, select group of articles that are high impact and likely to fundamentally change clinical practice.

Presenters

Sonia Roschelli, LCSW-S, LCDC (she/her), is the Director of Addictions and Recovery Services at Menninger. She has expertise in evidence-based practices for co-occurring disorders and is skilled in working with adolescents, adults and families at inpatient and outpatient levels of care. Sonia has completed advanced training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and other mindfulness and self-compassion-based approaches to treatment. Roschelli is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, Texas Association of Addiction Professionals and NAADAC, the Association for Addictions Professionals. She has given presentations locally and nationally about treating co-occurring disorders and mindfulness and acceptance-based approaches to treatment.
Having earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg, Va., Roschelli then earned a master’s degree in Social Work from George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. After completing a two-year, postgraduate Social Work Fellowship on the Adolescent Treatment Program at Menninger, she served as an adolescent therapist at The Council on Recovery in Houston. Roschelli then returned to Menninger, where she served as an addictions counselor on the Compass Program for Young Adults until taking on the role of senior addictions counselor at Menninger 360 in 2020.
In her free time, she enjoys rock climbing, hiking and practicing yoga and mindfulness. She also loves spending time with her dog, Albus, and cat, Dobby.

Mark S. Yurewicz, MD (he/him), is a staff psychiatrist on Menninger’s Adult Treatment Program and is an assistant professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine. He is board certified in adult psychiatry and board certified in addiction psychiatry. His interests include mindfulness for clinician wellness, medical education, and psychiatric care of immigrants and refugees. Dr. Yurewicz is a member of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, the American Psychiatric Association, and the Houston Psychiatric Society. He has presented on mindfulness, meditation, group therapy for refugees, opiate use and culturally-informed assessments.
Dr. Yurewicz earned his bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies from Rice University and his medical degree from the University of Texas at Southwestern. He completed a residency in Psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine and a fellowship in Addictions Psychiatry, also at Baylor College of Medicine.
When the weather is right, Dr. Yurewicz enjoys kayaking in a local cypress lake or gardening at home. He is also a regular volunteer and student teacher at Dawn Mountain Center for Tibetan Buddhism.

Board-certified in addiction psychiatry and adult psychiatry, Daryl Shorter, MD (he/him), is the medical director of Addictions Services at Menninger and also works in Outpatient Assessments. He is also an associate professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine.
Prior to his arrival at Menninger, Dr. Shorter served as an attending psychiatrist at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Administration Medical Center in Houston. His research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including The American Journal of Addictions, Journal of Psychiatric Practice, Addiction Biology, American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse and Journal of Neuropsychiatry, and Clinical Neurosciences. He also has contributed to chapters in books such as Biologics to Treat Substance Use Disorders: Vaccines, Monoclonal Antibodies, and Enzymes, Reference Module in Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Psychology, and The ASAM Principles of Addiction Medicine. In addition, Dr. Shorter is a past reviewer for the journals Drug and Alcohol Dependence and American Journal on Addictions.
Dr. Shorter is a member of The American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, The American Psychiatric Association and The American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training. He serves on the board of directors for the Archway Academy in Houston.
Dr. Shorter earned his bachelor’s degree from Rice University and his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine. His postgraduate training includes a general psychiatry residency at The Ohio State University and an addictions fellowship at New York University.

Torresy Smith, LPC, LCDC-I (he/him) is an addictions counselor at Menninger with more than 15 years of experience. His expertise includes: substance abuse, anger management, sexual health and life coaching. He earned his master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., and his undergraduate degree in Sociology and Psychology from Eastern Washington University.
Torresy can be humorous like Dave Chappelle, loves to barbecue brisket and ribs, and is the Ping Pong champion on the unit. He also coached Division 1 football for 12 years.
