Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate the indications, efficacy, and safety profiles of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), for the treatment of late-life mood disorders, including treatment-resistant depression.

  • Apply evidence-based principles of ECT practice in older adults by selecting appropriate electrode placement, dosing strategies, continuation treatments, and cognitive monitoring approaches based on patient-specific clinical factors.

  • Identify and manage common medical, cognitive, and neuropsychiatric complications associated with ECT in geriatric patients, incorporating risk-mitigation strategies and post-treatment relapse prevention plans.

Educational Goal

This presentation aims to enhance clinicians’ professional growth by deepening their knowledge in neuromodulation treatments for older adults with complex mood disorders. Learners will strengthen future clinical skills in applying evidence-based ECT and TMS strategies while thoughtfully balancing efficacy, safety, cognitive outcomes, and long-term management in geriatric populations.

Description

This comprehensive, high-yield educational activity is designed to enhance clinical competence in geriatric psychiatry and support clinicians preparing for the geriatric psychiatry board examination. Led by expert, board-certified faculty with extensive experience in clinical practice and education, the course delivers a structured review of core diagnostic and therapeutic topics relevant to the evaluation and management of psychiatric disorders in older adults. Through evidence-based content and interactive board-style self-assessment questions, participants will reinforce key concepts, identify learning needs, and integrate best practices into patient care
