|

Information

Date & Time

Description

Eating disorders are often viewed primarily as psychiatric illnesses. However, they carry significant medical risks, some of which can be life-threatening. Early recognition and thorough medical assessment are essential to ensure appropriate level-of-care placement and to optimize treatment outcomes. This educational program will provide participants with the practical knowledge and clinical framework needed to recognize eating disorders, assess medical and psychiatric risk, and make informed decisions regarding the most appropriate and effective treatment pathway.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the classifications of eating disorders and review prevalence data in the general population and ethnic and racial minority groups.

  • Identify effective screening tools and history-taking questions that mental health professionals can use to detect eating disorders in clinical practice.

  • Identify critical medical complications of eating disorders that inform level‑of‑care decisions and necessitate medical collaboration, and describe the full continuum of care to determine appropriate placement based on medical and behavioral criteria.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to teach participants how to identify eating disorders in their practice, assess the level of risk, and refer out when needed in order to ensure patient safety.
