Description

Eating disorders are among the most underidentified and undertreated mental health concerns in collegiate athletic environments, yet many universities lack formalized policies to guide prevention, identification, and response. This workshop examines the landscape of current institutional approaches to eating disorder policy in higher education and sport, drawing on consultation experience with university athletic programs to identify both gaps and best practices.

Participants will explore a practical framework for developing or strengthening institutional policy that bridges clinical eating disorder expertise with the operational realities of athletic departments — including the roles of coaches, athletic directors, sports medicine staff, and counseling centers. Through case examples and interdisciplinary discussion, attendees will leave with concrete tools and language to advocate for and build policy infrastructure at their home institutions.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify at least three structural gaps commonly found in university and athletic department policies related to eating disorder prevention and response.

  • Describe the key components of an evidence-informed institutional policy framework for eating disorders in collegiate athletic settings.

  • Distinguish the distinct roles and responsibilities of coaches, athletic directors, sports medicine staff, and mental health clinicians within a coordinated institutional response.

  • Apply a step-by-step consultation model for initiating or revising eating disorder policy at a university or athletic program.

  • Evaluate existing or proposed institutional policies using criteria aligned with current clinical standards and accreditation guidelines.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop will have participants explore a practical framework for developing or strengthening institutional policy that bridges clinical eating disorder expertise with the operational realities of athletic departments — including the roles of coaches, athletic directors, sports medicine staff, and counseling centers.
