Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate treatment-resistant, atypical, mixed-feature, and comorbidity-driven depressive presentations.

  • Identify key diagnostic pitfalls that contribute to pseudo-resistance​.

  • Apply evidence-based pharmacologic and psychotherapeutic strategies to manage complex depressive disorders, including augmentation, neuromodulation, and integrative approaches.​

  • Evaluate and modify treatment plans for depressive disorders in special populations, including older adults, adolescents, peripartum patients, individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions, and those with significant medical comorbidities.​

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to equip clinicians with evidence-based strategies to accurately assess and manage complex depressive disorders by recognizing diagnostic challenges, selecting appropriate treatment interventions, and adapting care for special populations.

Description

Depressive disorders frequently present with overlapping symptoms, diagnostic complexity, and patient-specific factors that challenge standard treatment approaches. This activity reviews the recognition and management of treatment-resistant depression, clinically significant specifiers, and common diagnostic pitfalls while exploring evidence-based pharmacologic, psychotherapeutic, and neuromodulation strategies. Participants will also examine considerations for treating depression across special populations, including older adults, adolescents, peripartum individuals, patients with medical comorbidities, and neurodiverse populations.

Presenters

Briana Tillman, DO
Bri Tillman studied International Relations at the United States Military Academy at West Point. After serving 5 years as a Military Police Officer in the Army, she was a military spouse in locations from Korea to Charlottesville, VA and earned a Masters in Teacher Education from the University of Oklahoma. She eventually became a DO at Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine and attended residency at the Medical Center of Aurora. Bri has directed an inpatient substance withdrawal management unit, worked with forensic restoration patients, and provided electroconvulsive therapy. Currently, she is an outpatient psychiatrist and clinic director at the Briargate Family Care Center in Colorado Springs.
