Description
Attendees will look into the world of inpatient treatment for the first responder. More specifically, this program will begin with an overview of indicators for when a first responder may need a higher level of care, such as inpatient treatment. Additionally, this program will discuss how to work with a first responder agency to get the employee to treatment.

Presenters

Dr. Nancy Panza
Dr. Nancy Ryba Panza is a Board-Certified Police and Public Safety Psychologist with over 20 years of experience working with first responders. Her educational background includes BS and MA degrees from Towson University and a PhD in Clinical Psychology with a concentration in Psychology and Law from the University of Alabama. Dr. Panza spent four years as an Assistant Professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City and 16 years as a Professor at California State University, Fullerton. After 20 years in academia, Dr. Panza moved into the private sector as Director of Clinical Research and Development for the family of companies that includes First Responder Wellness, The Counseling Team International, and Shift Wellness.
Dr. Panza’s clinical work and research have focused on criminal forensic assessment and police and public safety psychology. Dr. Panza has worked within county, state, and federal correctional facilities, providing clinical and forensic services for juvenile and adult offenders, and she has provided clinical and consulting services for public safety agencies across the US and internationally. She has a great passion for promoting modern policing practices and supporting the health and well-being of all first responders.

Chris Catren
Chris Catren served as the City of Redlands (CA) Chief of Police for over five years. He has a master’s degree in public administration, a bachelor’s in business administration, and is a graduate of the California Peace Officer Standards and Training Command College. Chris is a
career policing professional who began his career as the first crime analyst for the Redlands Police Department in 1994. He quickly built a national model crime analysis unit before transitioning to a police officer in 1996. His experiences in crime analysis, patrol and investigations gave him a foundation for keenly focusing on violent crime and the evidence-based strategies to impact it for the benefit of the community. He was promoted through the ranks of sergeant, lieutenant, and commander before becoming Chief of Police in 2017. During this time, he remained focused on implementing technologies, data-driven strategies, evidence-based practices, and relationship building to reduce crime and improve the quality of life in the city.
Having recently completed his service as the President of the California Police Chiefs Association, he is now the Immediate Past President. He has served as the President of the San Bernardino County Police Chiefs and Sheriff Association and sat on the League of California Cities Board of Directors. He has taught at the graduate and undergraduate level courses in both the California State University and University of California systems. Chris works with First Responder Wellness as a contractor in his role as the Director of Strategic Relationships.

Dr. Stephen Odom
Dr. Stephen Odom is a notable healthcare and addiction treatment professional with more than 30 years of expertise in the field. He is the Founder, President, and Chief Clinical Officer of First Responder Wellness and Shift Wellness as well as the CEO/CCO of The Counseling Team International. Dr. Odom’s focus on First Responder Wellness was born of his family’s career backgrounds with the military, healthcare, law enforcement, fire, education, and public safety, and this focus was honed as he created and led specialty programs for physicians, nurses, first responders, and their families.
Dr. Odom has a comprehensive educational background in healthcare, holding a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Behavior, master’s degrees in Experimental and Clinical Psychology, a doctoral candidacy in Clinical Psychology, and a Doctorate (Ph.D.) with a focus in Healthcare Administration. Moreover, he is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of California and Idaho. Some of his professional experience includes numerous administration and clinical leadership positions at behavioral health and chemical dependency treatment organizations and hospitals in California, such as Hoag Hospital in Orange County and El Camino Hospital in the San Francisco Bay Area. Dr. Odom has been coined as a wellness and behavioral health expert with peer-reviewed articles published on mental health, substance abuse and technology, and he was presented the National Behavioral Health Champion award in 2018. Additionally, Dr. Odom has appeared on The Today Show; the 2016 documentary film California High; and multiple print, radio, and podcast media channels.
