Description

The National Association for Children of Addiction (NACoA) leads national and international efforts to support children affected by parental substance use, addressing the estimated 1 in 4 children in the U.S. and 1 in 5 in the U.K. who live with a parent with a substance use disorder. This session examines scalable, culturally responsive, family-centered interventions—like Celebrating Families! and The Clergy Education and Training Project®—that interrupt intergenerational harm and promote resilience. Participants will explore how these evidence-based models translate across different systems and communities, with a lens on accessibility, equity, and lived experience.

Educational Goal

This presentation will enhance participants’ professional capacity to integrate family-centered, trauma-informed approaches into clinical and community practice, fostering more sophisticated strategies to support children and families affected by parental substance use disorders. It aims to strengthen clinical skills in recognizing intergenerational risk and resilience, ultimately improving culturally responsive interventions in future practice

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify three risk factors and three protective factors associated with children of parents with substance use disorders, incorporating global perspectives.

  • Describe how NACoA’s core programs—such as The Children’s Program Kit and Celebrating Families!—are designed for cross-cultural adaptation.

  • Apply trauma-informed, family-centered strategies into their work supporting children and families affected by parental SUDs.

  • Evaluate emerging international approaches and opportunities for collaboration to advance support for this vulnerable population.
