Description

While the digital world offers opportunities for youth to experiment with new forms of learning and self-expression, it is also exponentially providing information to youth about sex. The learning gap arises when youth comprehend significantly less from formal education compared to the real life challenges and sexualized information today’s youth face. Youth are blending the details of their personal and social lives with messages and images from people with all sorts of interests and intentions. Many are exposed to far more information than they are equipped to understand and deal with effectively. The best protection for youth occurs in the level of critical thinking in their minds and not just in filters on their devices.
This presentation will discuss the current, fast changing digital landscape and how tech enables early exposure to sexualized materials and the spread of child sexual abuse materials (CSAM) and sexual exploitation. The presenter will also provide information and resources to assist parents, therapists and caregivers to understand the unique risks when normative sexual exploration and technology mix--Resources aimed to equip parents to know when, and how, to have conversations with their children about sexualized materials and online safety.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is for participants to gain an understanding of the rapidly evolving digital landscape and its impact on youth exposure to sexualized content, exploitation risks, and child sexual abuse materials (CSAM). They will also learn practical, developmentally informed strategies to strengthen critical thinking and equip parents, therapists, and caregivers to effectively navigate conversations about online safety and normative sexual exploration in the context of technology.

Learning Objectives
