Bridging the Gap: How Virtual Supports & Extends Higher Levels of Care

|

Information

Date & Time

Description

As eating disorder care increasingly moves across locations, virtual treatment has become a critical bridge — helping clients step down safely from inpatient, residential, and in-person PHP care while extending specialized, evidence-based treatment to those who cannot reach it in person. This presentation examines the current 2026 regulatory landscape, the benefits and challenges of virtual eating disorder treatment, and concrete best practices for delivering safe, engaging, and clinically effective care in a virtual setting. Drawing on recent research and frontline clinical experience, presenters will demonstrate how virtual programming can both support transitions from — and extend the reach of — those needing higher levels of care.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe at least three evidence-based strategies for engaging and retaining eating disorder clients in virtual higher levels of care from the first day of treatment — including unified multidisciplinary care-team engagement and early family/support involvement — to reduce premature discharge.

  • Apply a harm-reduction framework to level-of-care decision-making in virtual treatment — including remote safety assessment, behavioral treatment agreements, and criteria for stepping clients up to, or safely bridging down from, higher levels of care.

  • Evaluate outcome data on the effectiveness of virtual eating disorder treatment across ages, symptom measures, and levels of care, and identify how virtual programming extends access to specialized care (e.g., ARFID, family-based treatment) beyond geographic limits.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to equip clinicians and program leaders with an up-to-date understanding of how virtual care supports and extends higher levels of eating disorder treatment, and to provide practical, evidence-informed strategies for delivering safe and effective virtual programming across the continuum of care.
