Participants will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of addressing trauma in eating disorder treatment.

  • Identify one adaptation to eating disorder treatment when there is a diagnosis of 1) Borderline Personality Disorder or 2)Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD).

  • Discuss the development of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and their utility as modalities/ approaches for treating eating disorders.

  • Explain the Binge Eating Disorder (BED) and criteria for its diagnosis.

  • Identify 2 or more ways to address weight stigma in eating disorder treatment.

  • Identify 2 ways to demonstrate cultural competency in eating disorder treatment and two reasons why it is important.

Description

In this unique presentation, we will discuss crucial “breakthroughs” in the treatment of eating disorders, seen through the lens of a seasoned clinician’s 20 years of experience developing treatment for eating disorders in higher levels of care. We will learn about a selection of “game changers” whose work has been integral in improving the quality of treatment, highlighting the importance of integrating these breakthroughs into treatment. Delving into how these game changers and breakthroughs impacted those who we once called “treatment resistant”, we will reflect on our own past limitations in the field, with enthusiasm for the future.

Presenters

Wendy Oliver-Pyatt, PhD

Dr. Wendy Oliver-Pyatt is a world-leading expert on treating eating disorders. With more than 25 years of clinical experience, she has developed five separate treatment programs, all grounded on a strong bio-psycho-social foundation, and incorporating intensive psychotherapy and family therapy, with behavioral foundations, and high medical standards. Wendy has developed a unique treatment approach that delves into the underlying issues that place a person at risk for mental health conditions and eating disorders and lead to healing, health and inner peace. Wendy is currently Co-Founder and CEO of two leading eating disorder treatment programs, Galen Hope in Coral Gables, Fl, and Within Health, a virtual treatment program operating in 25 states and growing. Wendy received her specialty training at New York University-Bellevue Hospital in New York City, she has also held faculty positions at New York University, Albert Einstein School of Medicine and University of Nevada School of Medicine. Wendy is Board Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and in both Adult and Addiction Psychiatry. She is the author of two books, most recently Questions and Answers on Binge Eating Disorder, A Guide for Clinicians. She is a Fellow of the Academy for Eating Disorders and the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals. She has received Senatorial Recognition for her commitment to the mental health treatment community.
