Breaking Barriers: Addressing Diabetes Stigma to Improve Treatment Outcomes in Eating Disorders and Diabetes Management

|

Information

Date & Time

Description

This webinar will explore the pervasive impact of diabetes-related stigma on treatment and recovery for individuals living with both diabetes and eating disorders. Participants will learn about how stigma around diabetes management—such as judgments about blood sugar levels, body weight, and dietary choices—can exacerbate feelings of shame and distress, leading to more significant challenges in eating disorder treatment and diabetes care. We will examine the psychological and physical toll that stigma takes on individuals with co-occurring diabetes and eating disorders, considering how it often results in reluctance to seek support, increased social isolation, and delayed treatment.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Recognize common manifestations of diabetes-related stigma encountered by individuals with co-occurring diabetes and eating disorders.

  • Identify at least three ways diabetes-related stigma can interfere with engagement in eating disorder treatment and diabetes self-management.

  • Integrate at least two evidence-informed approaches to reduce stigma and create a more supportive, recovery-oriented environment for individuals managing both diabetes and eating disorders.

Educational Goal

The educational goal is for participants to gain an understanding of how diabetes-related stigma affects eating disorder treatment, diabetes management, and recovery. They will learn practical strategies to recognize and reduce stigma in order to foster more supportive, person-centered care for individuals with co-occurring diabetes and eating disorders.
