Date & Time

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the role of the ASAM Criteria in establishing clinical treatment standards and guiding admission, placement, continued-stay, and transition decisions for youth with substance use disorder (SUD)..

  • Apply youth-specific clinical considerations when evaluating multidimensional needs, developmental status, family and caregiver involvement, co-occurring conditions, safety, and recovery environment.

  • Differentiate clinical admission criteria from program eligibility requirements and identify policies that may create inappropriate barriers to treatment.

  • Translate ASAM assessment findings into actionable treatment standards, including service intensity, clinical monitoring, interdisciplinary care, family engagement, and reassessment.

  • Identify at least three common implementation challenges and strategies for aligning program policies, documentation, and clinical workflows with the ASAM Criteria framework.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this presentation is to equip providers and treatment program leaders with a practical understanding of how to use the ASAM Criteria to establish appropriate treatment standards and inform program admission decisions for children and adolescents with substance use disorders while accounting for developmental needs, family involvement, co-occurring conditions, and the unique circumstances of adolescent recovery.

Description

This one-hour session will explore practical application of the ASAM Criteria as a framework for establishing treatment standards and program admission criteria for children and adolescents with substance use disorders (SUD). Emphasis will be placed on youth-specific clinical considerations, individualized treatment planning, appropriate level-of-care determination, and distinguishing clinical treatment needs from administrative eligibility requirements. Through case-based examples, participants will identify strategies to improve admission decisions, align program policies with the ASAM Criteria and support developmentally appropriate, person-centered care for this population.
