Beyond the Checklist: Applying ASAM Criteria to Pregnancy & Perinatal Substance Use Disorder Care

Information

Date & Time

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Apply the ASAM Criteria to perinatal populations by incorporating pregnancy-related medical needs, substance use severity, co-occurring conditions, recovery environment, and patient preferences into assessment and treatment planning.

  • Evaluate level-of-care and treatment placement decisions for pregnant and postpartum individuals, including considerations for withdrawal management, ongoing SUD treatment, and transitions between levels of care.

  • Identify at least three strategies to improve access and continuity of care, including coordination between addiction treatment, obstetric care, behavioral health, and community support services.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to equip providers with practical skills for applying the ASAM Criteria to pregnant and postpartum individuals with substance use disorders, with emphasis on maternal and fetal safety, individualized level-of-care decisions, coordinated perinatal care, and reducing barriers to evidence-based treatment.

Description

Pregnancy and the postpartum period present unique clinical, psychosocial, and operational considerations in the treatment of substance use disorders. Applying the ASAM Criteria to this population requires thoughtful integration of substance-related risks, obstetric and medical needs, co-occurring psychiatric conditions, recovery environment, patient preferences, and access to appropriate perinatal services.

This one-hour deep-dive session will explore how to use the ASAM Criteria to guide assessment, level-of-care determination, treatment planning, and transitions for pregnant and postpartum individuals. Through practical clinical scenarios, participants will examine common challenges in treatment placement, coordination between addiction and obstetric care, program admission policies, and appropriate utilization. The session will emphasize person-centered, evidence-based care that supports both maternal and infant health while avoiding unnecessary barriers to treatment.
