Description

This presentation provides an overview of Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder with a focus on distinguishing the disorder from typical picky eating and other eating disorders. Participants will review key diagnostic features, common medical and psychosocial challenges, and factors that contribute to the development and maintenance of ARFID. Attention will be given to understanding ARFID in individuals with neurodevelopmental differences, including how sensory sensitivities and developmental profiles can shape eating patterns and treatment needs. The session will also highlight evidence-based treatment approaches and the importance of individualized, multidisciplinary care to support children, adolescents, and young adults with ARFID.

Heather Kertesz-Briest, Psy.D. is a clinical pediatric psychologist specializing in helping children, adolescents, young adults, and parents navigate acute and chronic medical conditions, as well as emotional, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental challenges. With 15+ years of clinical experience in providing both neuropsychological assessment and psychotherapy — nearly exclusively in children’s hospitals — she brings a multidisciplinary perspective to her private practice.
