Description

This presentation explores advanced strategies for those supervising LGBTQIA+ trainees to create affirming, supportive, and empowering supervisory relationships. Participants will learn to recognize and address unique challenges faced by queer supervisees, including stressors they experience based on their identities and intersectionality. The session will cover techniques for fostering a safe, inclusive, and an authentic supervision environment while supporting supervisees on how to navigate LGBTQIA+-specific ethical dilemmas. Attendees will gain practical tools for enhancing cultural competence, challenging heteronormative assumptions in clinical work, and advocating for systemic changes. This webinar aims to equip supervisors with the knowledge and skills to effectively nurture the professional growth of queer therapists-in-training.

Presenters

Kelsey Ward, PhD, LPCC-S (OH), CCMHC (they/them)

Dr. Ward (they/them) is an LPCC-S (OH) at Clintonville Counseling and Wellness in Columbus, OH, specializing in issues of gender and sexuality for teens and adults. With a diverse background, they are skilled in addressing a wide range of client needs. Additionally, Dr. Ward serves as a clinical faculty member at Adams State University, where they obtained their PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision in 2023. They also hold an MS from Wright State University (2016) and a BA from The Ohio State University (2012). Their practice, teaching, and supervision are grounded in person-centered and feminist theories.

 

Dr. Ward has presented at national, state, and regional conferences on LGBTQ+ issues and counseling techniques. Furthermore, they have organized independent continuing education events focused on LGBTQ+ topics and provided training for middle- and high-school educators on supporting LGBTQ+ youth

Karli Iceman, PhD, LPC (CO, MI), NCC (she/her/hers)

Dr. Karli Iceman (she/her/hers) is an Assistant Professor in the School of Counselor Education at Adams State University. Dr. Iceman obtained her bachelors’ degrees in English, History, and Psychology and her master’s degree in Counseling: Clinical Mental Health from Oakland University. Dr. Iceman has provided counseling services in partial hospitalization and private practice settings throughout the metro Detroit area and practices from a person-centered and a relational-cultural approach. Dr. Iceman has supervised counselors-in-training and enjoys supporting them in their professional development to be effective and culturally aware counselors. While Dr. Iceman’s research has primarily focused on online counselor education, she is also interested in exploring supervisory practices and supporting the diverse needs of supervisees and their clients.
