This presentation examines how masking can conceal an adolescent’s distress, capacities, and support needs. Participants will explore why adolescents may function differently across home, school, treatment, and social environments and how these variations can be misunderstood. Practical strategies will help clinicians and families recognize signs of masking, develop more accurate expectations, reduce unsustainable demands, and create environments that support authenticity, regulation, and long-term well-being.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this presentation is to increase participants' ability to recognize neurodivergent burnout in adolescents by understanding how masking can influence behavior across settings, identifying signs of hidden distress, and applying strategies that support sustainable functioning and well-being.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify at least three common signs of masking and neurodivergent burnout in adolescents across home, treatment, and social settings.

  • Differentiate neurodivergent burnout from behavioral noncompliance, lack of motivation, or other common clinical interpretations through analyzing case-based examples.

  • Apply at least two evidence-informed strategies to help manage demands, adjust expectations, and create environments that support authenticity, emotional regulation, and well-being.
