Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Name at least two common presentations of co-occurring eating disorders and autism and describe common areas of overlap.

  • Describe treatment outcomes for patients with autism and eating disorders.

  • Identify at least three ways in which evidence-based interventions can be adapted for the treatment of eating disorders and autism.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this presentation is to prepare attendees to understand common presentations of co-occurring eating disorders and autism, describe treatment outcomes for patients with autism and eating disorders, and identify ways in which evidence-based interventions can be adapted for the treatment of eating disorders and autism.

Description

Eating disorders and autism often co-occur; up to 37% of individuals with eating disorders also have autism. Unfortunately, many clinicians and providers remain unaware of this common overlap, which can negatively impact the treatment experience and outcomes for these individuals. This presentation will provide an overview of autism and eating disorders, and how the two might present. It will also discuss a variety of important considerations when working with this population, including cross-collaboration with other specialities and how to modify common eating disorder interventions to align with the needs of autistic patients.
