Educational Goal
Description
The opioid crisis was declared a Public Health Emergency in October of 2017. By June 2021, synthetic opioids were implicated in 87% of opioid deaths and 65% of all overdose deaths, and in April of 2022, the CDC estimated that over 108,000 drug overdose deaths occurred in the year prior. Even with the clearly imminent need to address Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), effective treatments, including medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), are available but underutilized, with only 25% of those affected receiving specialty treatment. To address this disparity, this course will: - Review the epidemiology and impact of opioid use disorder; - Review treatment options, including the “gold standard” treatment of MOUD as well as complementary counseling and behavioral therapies, harm reduction, prevention, and non-opioid treatments; - Highlight strategies to address stigma and promote patient-centered care.
