Educational Goal

The educational goal of this workshop is to increase knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of anxiety.

Description

This workshop offers a practical approach to diagnosing and treating anxiety in adolescents and adults. Through an exploration of the symptoms, triggers, and warning signs of anxiety, the diagnostic criteria for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and instruction on the GAD-7 assessment, we will help attendees to increase confidence in their ability to diagnose anxiety. We will discuss healthy and unhealthy coping skills and introduce effective interventions that incorporate CBT (cognitive-behavioral therapy) and mindfulness techniques/ existential based interventions. The presentation will also touch on neurobiological underpinnings of anxiety, the connection between anxiety and depression, and cultural considerations for anxiety.

Presenters

Alexis Y. Mueller, PhD, LPC, NCC

Dr. Alexis Y. Muller, PhD, LPC, has been working with clients since 2011. She specialized in anxiety, grief, depression, mood disorders, spirituality, and sexuality. She is the owner of AIM Professional Counseling in New Orleans where she serves individuals, couples and teens. She incorporates her existential lens of searching for meaning and purpose with CBT techniques. She graduated from Loyola University New Orleans with a Masters of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and a Masters of Pastoral Studies in 2011. In 2018, she completed her doctorate of Philosophy in Counseling Education and Supervision from the University of New Orleans. She has taught Masters counseling courses in Ethics, Research and Statistics, Assessments and Theory.

Melissa Fleming, PhD, LPC-S, NCC

Dr. Melissa W. Fleming, PhD, LPC-S, is a licensed professional counselor and supervisor at MWF Counseling in Port Neches, Texas. She specializes in working with clients who struggle with depression, anxiety, ADHD, and other mental health issues. She conceptualizes and treats clients from a cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) approach. She graduated with a M.Ed. (2011) and Ph.D. (2020) in counselor education from the University of New Orleans. Her research interests include emotional intelligence,personality type and professional development.
