Provide a baseline of information that encourages further exploration and practice for counselors working with patients with substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders in residential, high intensity, and intensive outpatient settings.
Description
This series provides an overview of the major elements of substance abuse treatment, beginning with a review of problematic substances and co-occurring mental health disorders, expanding into evidence-based counseling modalities as used in treatment settings for substance use disorders (SUDS), including crisis management, and ending with issues of ethical, culturally responsive professional practice, of which documentation is a vital part. The series is not meant to be exhaustive; rather, it is meant to raise questions and encourage further study and practice of the skills of the addiction professional.

Presenters

Cinde Stewart Freeman is the Chief Clinical Officer at Cumberland Heights in Nashville, TN. Cinde has been in the behavioral healthcare field for over 35 years, serving in direct care, clinical management, quality management, and leadership roles. She is a bachelor’s prepared Registered Nurse and a master’s prepared Level II Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor. Cinde has also held the Qualified Clinical Supervisor credential for many years and enjoys stoking the passions of people who are coming into the field. She has trained at the national, state, and local level, holding a particular interest in the relationship between somatic and spiritual healing as well as how the lived wisdom of the Twelve Steps informs clinical education and experience.

Prior to his current position as Clinical Director of the Women’s Department, Kirk Schafer worked as a family counselor for six years at Cumberland Heights, providing direct family services to patients and families. Prior to his time at Cumberland Heights, Kirk served in a variety of clinical therapy and administrative roles for three different behavioral health organizations in multiple states. Kirk has a passion for helping people learn to trust themselves again, to recover from the depths of self-destruction associated with addiction and other mental illnesses, and to build healthy and happy lives.

Vivian Sypolt is the Clinical Director of the Men’s Residential Program at Cumberland Heights. She has a Master’s of Science and is a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (Level II). She is driven by a desire to help others in crisis create a better life for themselves. Her dedication and drive for recovery are strong themes of her educational process when working with patients and supervisees.

Kristy Roll joined the Cumberland Heights team in 2012 as a Youth Primary Counselor and now serves as the Family Services & Experiential Therapies Director. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s in social work. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Kristy is passionate about providing education and healing to loved ones battling addiction so that they may begin a journey of recovery for themselves.

Marlena has been at Cumberland Heights since 2012 and currently serves as the Director of Utilization Review Services. She holds a BS in Human Development from Vanderbilt and an MSW from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. She holds LMSW and LADAC II licenses in the State of TN and is a QCS supervisor for those seeking LADAC licensure. She lives in Nashville with her Jack Tzu (Jack Russell/Shih Tzu mix), Maggie, and believes there is no such thing as unusual behavior if you know someone’s whole story.

Matthew has worked at Cumberland Heights for over five years and worked in a variety of clinical positions and programs since his start. He has been a fundamental member of the Nashville recovery community by hosting events and creating more resources for those suffering from the disease of addiction.
