  • Describe at least one example of how grassroots advocacy by LCCNC has impacted the profession of counseling in North Carolina and supported clients.

  • Identify the LCCNC 2025 Advocacy Priorities.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this session is for participants to understand what advocacy is and actions they can take to advocate for their profession and their clients.

Description

If you’ve ever asked yourself what you can do to advocate for your profession or to support your clients, this session is for you. During this one hour session, we will identify proposed and potential legislation relevant to our profession and discuss how you can get involved individually and through LCCNC. To help illustrate the impact you can have, we will look at an example of how LCCNC successfully lobbied to get legislation passed that supports both our profession and our clients. Finally, we will review our 2025 Advocacy Priorities.

Ashley Perkinson, JD
Ashley Perkinson represents both statewide and national organizations at the North Carolina General Assembly. She has represented LPCANC now LCCNC since 2007. Ashley also currently serves on the North Carolina Symphony Board of Trustees, Governor's School Foundation Board, and UNC Alumni Association Board. She also formerly served as president of the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Wake County and former secretary of the Wake County Bar Association. She is also a former board member of SafeChild. In 2011, Ashley was named by Triangle Business Journal as one of the Triangle's 40 Under 40. Ashley was recognized in 2021 by North State Journal as one of North Carolina's top 25 lobbyists. Ashley is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Journalism and School of Law. Ashley enjoys providing government relations services to her clients.
William Stewart, LCMHCA, NCC, MBA
Bill Stewart is the current Advocacy Chair for LCCNC. He is in private practice where he works with veterans and LGBTQ+ clients - 2 communities he is passionate about supporting. Prior to becoming a counselor, Bill spent five years in the US Army where he served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division followed by 23 years in orthopedics at Johnson & Johnson.
