Description

Father absence is a critical ACE impacting Black males' mental health, relationships, and family dynamics. This workshop examines its connection to PTSD, depression, conduct disorders, and attachment disruptions, highlighting intergenerational trauma’s effects on marriage and parenting. Participants will explore diagnostic insights and trauma-informed interventions to support healing and resilience. Through culturally responsive strategies, attendees will gain practical tools for addressing father loss in clinical practice.

Bernell L. Elzey, Jr., Ph.D., LPC, NCC
Dr. Bernell Elzey, Jr. is the Program Director for the Low-Residential Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program at Antioch University Seattle. He serves as President of the Louisiana School Counseling Association, Co-Chair of the Diversity and Social Justice Committee within the Southern Association of Counselor Education and Supervision, and a member of the Administrative Council of the Louisiana Counseling Association. A National School Counselor Fellow at San Diego State University’s Center for Equity and Postsecondary Attainment (CEPA), Dr. Elzey’s work emphasizes culturally responsive counseling, social justice, and mental health equity. As founder of Conscious Therapy and Wellness, LLC, he offers inclusive clinical and consulting services. His research targets African-American adolescent males, father absenteeism, and social justice counseling. A committed leader, he promotes culturally responsive and trauma-informed practices.
