This intermediate-level course examines the relationship between Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Substance Use Disorders (SUD). Participants will explore common myths and misconceptions surrounding ADHD, identify hallmark symptoms and underlying causes, and review risk factors that contribute to the co-occurrence of ADHD and substance use. The course also introduces evidence-based approaches for recognizing and beginning treatment of individuals with ADHD and co-occurring SUD, helping healthcare professionals improve assessment, engagement, and treatment outcomes.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this presentation is to discuss the intersection of ADHD and Substance Use Disorders, equipping healthcare professionals with the skills to separate myth from clinical reality regarding etiology and risk factors. Participants will walk away with actionable, evidence-based strategies to effectively recognize, assess, and initiate treatment for clients navigating these co-occurring challenges.

Presenters

Lauren Bishop, LICSW has over 10 years of experience in addiction treatment. She is currently the Clinical Director at Recovery Centers of America at Westminster's Detox and Residential Treatment Program.  Prior RCA, Lauren worked at UMASS Harrington Hospital on their dual diagnosis inpatient psych and emergency services teams before transitioning to their outpatient recovery services department providing group and individual therapy and served as the primary therapist for East Brookfield District Court’s Drug Court program.  Lauren is currently an Adjunct Professor at Springfield College School of Social Work.
