Description

This presentation fills a need for a clear primer on TTRPGs in the therapy space, explaining what they are, how they are currently being used in therapeutic settings, and how they can be applied more intentionally for clinical growth. It helps professionals understand the core mechanisms, possibilities, and limitations of the modality. It also highlights common barriers—such as safety, structure, and clinician confidence—to support the beginning of more ethical and effective use.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Define what TTRPGs are and describe how they function within therapeutic settings.

  • Identify the core therapeutic mechanisms in TTRPG play, including narrative exploration, emotional regulation, and collaborative problem-solving.

  • Apply foundational safety and structure practices—such as Session Zero, boundaries tools, and opening/closing rituals—to support ethical facilitation.

  • Recognize common barriers to implementing TTRPG therapy and explore strategies for using these interventions more intentionally and effectively.

Educational Goal

The educational goal of this session is to equip professionals in the therapeutic field with a foundational understanding of tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) as a therapeutic tool, enabling them to recognize their potential applications and limitations.
