Educational Goal

The educational goal of this presentation is to enhance the knowledge and skills of clinicians and parents regarding the impact of diet culture and social media on the body image and eating behaviors of adolescents and young adults. By providing evidence-based strategies for evaluating current dieting trends and addressing the associated physical and psychological risks, the session aims to empower professionals to effectively support and guide young individuals in making informed nutritional choices and fostering a positive body image.

Description

About half of Generation Z feel pressure to get a "summer body," and they often turn to fad diets as a result. This presentation explores current dieting trends among adolescents and young adults, focusing on the influence of diet culture and social media on body image.

Clinicians will be equipped with evidence-based strategies to assess and address diet-related concerns, promote positive body image, and support healthy behavior change. The presentation will also offer practical guidance for engaging parents and caregivers in conversations about diet culture, fostering protective family environments, and reducing risk for disordered eating among young people.

Presenters

Kara Becker, LMFT, CEDs-C leads the growth and development of evidence-based treatment initiatives across Newport Healthcare's nationwide programs. With more than a decade of experience in clinical leadership, she has directed multiple residential and outpatient programs focused on eating disorder recovery and mental health. An AAMFT Approved Supervisor and Certified Eating Disorder Specialist Consultant, Kara trains clinicians in best practices and provides national program oversight. Passionate about education and advocacy, she has presented at major conferences on integrating eating disorder treatment into general psychiatric settings, and has been a featured expert for Parents magazine and FOX11 Los Angeles, among other national shows and publications. She holds a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from Southern Connecticut State University.
Annaliese DiFabbio is a Registered Dietitian, Certified Eating Disorder Specialist Consultant, and Certified Personal Trainer based in Connecticut. She serves as the Nutrition Manager at Newport Academy, where she provides nutrition therapy for adolescents and young adults in mental health treatment and manages a team of dietitians who provide remote services. With nearly a decade of experience in eating disorder treatment, Annaliese is passionate about integrating evidence-based nutrition with compassionate, individualized care. Her work focuses on helping clients rebuild a healthy relationship with food while addressing the underlying psychological and behavioral factors that sustain disordered eating.
